Phoenix Solar AG, a leading international photovoltaic system integrator listed in Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, has realised a rooftop power plant with a peak output of 800 kilowatt in Naklo, Slovenia. The solar power plant was built by Phoenix Solar in cooperation with Gorenjske elektrarne and completed and connected to the grid of the local electricity supplier in December 2011. It is currently one of the ten largest solar power plants in Slovenia. "This is the second project in Slovenia which Phoenix Solar AG has successfully implemented in 2011. They are willing to invest in renewable energies or to have their roofs used for the construction of photovoltaic plants. We are confident that more projects will be realised in Slovenia this year", stated Thomas Sanders, who heads up Phoenix Solar AG's European rooftop plant operations. Gorenjske elektrarne is a subsidiary of Elektro Gorenjska, one of Slovenia's leading energy utilities. The company specialises in the development of power from renewable energies and already has a portfolio comprising a number of solar and hydropower plants. The Merkur Group, which provides high-end technical products and operates several research centres in Slovenia, is the owner of the roof area. Phoenix Solar AG aims is to continue its good cooperation with Gorenjske elektrarne and the Merkur Group in 2012. Slovenia offers interesting remuneration for the operators of solar plants and systems. It is based on a feed-in tariff model similar to that of Germany and is a lucrative opportunity for investors to commit to the expansion of renewable energies. The feed-in tariff paid for this project is 30.4 euro cents per kilowatt hour, guaranteed for a period of 15 years.

Koç says TOFAŞ ‘close’ to producing national car
Local automotive manufacturer TOFAŞ, which produces cars in partnership with Italian auto giant Fiat, is close to producing Turkey’s first domestically manufactured car, Koç Holding CEO Mustafa Koç told reporters in İstanbul on Thursday. A government initiative introduced last year to produce the country’s first national car brand has attracted the attention of both foreign and local firms; the government requested that Turkish industrialists introduce plans for the project. Koç’s remarks came amidst heated discussions as to how the first local car brand could be produced. The initiative has been in the works for over a year and has been receiving more attention, as 80 percent of consumers support a domestic brand and 72 percent have expressed an interest in one, according to a recent survey. Seeing much potential, various companies earlier contacted the government in anticipation of receiving a share in the newly created local car market. The first vehicle should be designed as a passenger car and Koç says TOFAŞ is a reliable company to undertake this project. His partner, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, recently told the Turkish press that the company was continuing talks with the Turkish government and the Koç family in order to produce a national car brand for Turkey. Acknowledging Marchionne’s statements, Koç added that the local car would be manufactured in a completely new production platform in their Bursa facility. “We are not going to use the already-existing platforms for Fiat’s Palio and Albea model passenger cars produced in Turkey,” he said, indicating his company placed great emphasis on the new car being manufactured with the highest local contribution possible. Government officials have given the green light to foreign contributions in the creation of the country’s first national car brand. This means the project will result in a car brand that will produce cars assembled with “mostly Turkish parts.” Marchionne also said the design and auto-parts supply for the possible joint Fiat-Koç car would be developed in Turkey. Asked if TOFAŞ has any specific model or price in mind for the new car, Koç said it was too early to give further details, but studies were under way in close cooperation with the government. “But I could say in advance that this car will be something most people could afford to buy,” he added.

Youngman and Turkish Government Interested in Saab Assets
That doesn’t necessarily indicate the end of Saab : Swedish law allows a company to come out of bankruptcy if investors are willing to quickly infuse the necessary amount of cash. Immediately after the court declared Saab bankrupt, the brand’s ex-CEO, announced that two unnamed parties had spoken up to claim Saab, or at least parts of it. According to Hans Bergqvist, the administrator in charge of liquidating Saab, one of them is Youngman, and the second one is the Turkish government. The first comes as no surprise. The Chinese company tried to save Saab until the last minute and has invested tens of millions of euros into it over the last few months. Youngman is not letting Saab go without a fight. A spokesperson for the company said that it was primarily interested in the Phoenix platform that was set to underpin the next-generation 9-3, but that it might also buy other technology that is not dependent on ex-Saab owner General Motors. The second shouldn’t come as a surprise, either. Turkey has numerous auto factories on its territory; Fiat, Renault, Toyota , Ford , and Hyundai all build cars there. What the country doesn’t have is its own car brand. Several months ago, the Turkish Minister of Industry Nihat Ergun voiced his desire for Turkey to have its own automaker. While this has not been confirmed, it is doubtful that Turkey is interested in buildings Saabs. A more likely scenario is that the country would pick up the Phoenix platform and try to design a car around it to finally launch its own brand. It is too early to say what will happen next. Anything is possible; Youngman and the Turkish government could even work together on the project. Whichever option ends up being chosen, it is unlikely that production will remain in Trollhättan.

In four years, the solar manufacturing sector shifted from being led by a geographically dispersed number of companies to one dominated by Chinese companies. In 2006, there were two companies from China in the list of top ten cell producers. In 2010, there were six, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. More than five years ago, a bold policy decision was taken by the government to encourage private investment in the sector along the public-private partnership model (PPP). Turkey is considered to be one of the key countries in solar energy with long insulation periods similar to Spain, Italy and North African countries. “Turkey offers tremendous opportunities in solar energy that Bosch cannot afford to ignore,” said Colm.

Is this a good idea? Thorium nuclear reactors?
Thorium has huge potential advantages over uranium and plutonium. It's abundant in nature — the world has about 12 million tons of monazite, the raw material from which thorium is milled, according to the World Nuclear Association. And thorium generates energy more efficiently than uranium 235, while producing much, much smaller amounts of waste. More importantly, from the perspective of those who are unnerved by the accident at Fukushima-Daiichi, thorium reactors may be a lot more catastrophe proof.

Vodafone moves Supreme Court against tax claim
Telecom service provider Vodafone said Tuesday it has challenged in the Supreme Court the penalty levied by the income tax department on its acquisition of Hutchison Wampoa's majority stake in Hutch Essar in India. After the 2007 acquisition, the company was renamed Vodafone Essar. Vodafone last week bought out the Essar stake for $5 billion. "It is difficult to understand the rationale behind the tax authorities seeking to impose penalties on a matter which the tax authorities have, themselves, described as a 'test case'," the company said in a statement. "The position being taken by the tax authorities is both unprecedented and also out of step with international taxation principles governing acquisitions, which are designed to encourage investment," it added.
